prehensile-tailed-porcupine Care Sheet

Origin:

Prehensile-tailed porcupines (*Coendou spp.*) are arboreal rodents native to Central and South America. They inhabit tropical forests and are primarily tree-dwelling, using their prehensile tails to navigate branches.

Description:

These porcupines have a distinctive prehensile tail, which they use for gripping branches. Adults weigh 3–10 pounds and measure 18–26 inches in body length, with tails of similar length. Lifespan in captivity is generally 10–15 years. They are nocturnal and primarily herbivorous.

Temperament:

Prehensile-tailed porcupines are generally shy and nocturnal. They can become accustomed to gentle handling but are best observed rather than frequently handled due to their quills. They are intelligent and require mental stimulation.

Feeding:

High-fiber foods are essential to support digestion and wear down continuously growing teeth.

Housing:

Companionship:

Prehensile-tailed porcupines are generally solitary. They can tolerate a companion if introduced carefully, but housing multiple adults together is not recommended due to territorial behavior.

Handling:

Handling should be minimal due to quills. Approach slowly and calmly, using gloves if needed. Observe and interact mainly through safe handling methods.

Health:

Common health concerns:

Signs of illness: Poor appetite, lethargy, abnormal feces, or excessive scratching. Consult an exotic animal veterinarian promptly if symptoms appear.

Grooming:

Prehensile-tailed porcupines groom themselves. Providing climbing structures and soft bedding supports natural behaviors. Regular inspection of quills and nails is recommended.
