Tenrec Care Sheet

tenrec Care Sheet

Origin:

Tenrecs are small mammals native to Madagascar, with some species found in parts of mainland Africa. They belong to the family Tenrecidae and are closely related to hedgehogs and shrews. Popular pet species include the Lesser Hedgehog Tenrec (*Echinops telfairi*).

Description:

Tenrecs are small, nocturnal mammals with spiny fur (depending on species) and elongated snouts. Adults typically range from 4–8 inches in length and weigh 2–5 ounces. They have sharp claws for digging and can roll into a ball when threatened. Lifespan in captivity averages 5–8 years.

Temperament:

Tenrecs are shy and mostly nocturnal. They are curious but can be nervous around humans. With gentle handling and time, they can become accustomed to their owners but are not as interactive as some rodents. Best suited for dedicated and patient handlers.

Feeding:

Ensure diet is varied and rich in protein to mimic natural feeding habits.

Housing:

Companionship:

Most tenrec species are solitary and prefer to be housed alone. Attempting to house multiple individuals may lead to aggression. Always monitor if introducing additional tenrecs.

Handling:

Tenrecs are delicate and nocturnal, so handle them gently during their active periods (usually evening/night). Begin by allowing them to explore your hand while offering food. Avoid forcing handling.

Health:

Common health concerns:

Signs of illness: Lethargy, loss of appetite, abnormal weight, sneezing, or dull fur. Consult an exotic animal veterinarian if symptoms appear.

Grooming:

Tenrecs are naturally clean. Spiny species may groom themselves by rolling. Provide a shallow sand bath for hygiene if appropriate for the species.
